Photo Portraits

I've created a few a these for friends in the past, and it's fun to put them together. Basically you can take a snapshot and turn it into large-scale warholesque pop-art canvas prints for your wall... Anyway, I'd like to do more of them so if anyone wants to try it out, please email me and let's do it. This one is a picture of Moses that I think I'll print out on stretched canvas at 36"x36".

Then the whole room full of thousands of design professionals give him a standing ovation. So stop whatever you are doing, buy his book, and get on board.

View of Pleasant Valley

When I painted this I thought it looked great. I liked the subtle colors the strong shapes, high contrast, sense of depth, and it reminds me of Northern Utah where I grew up.

Here is what it looked like after I thought it was finished:

I sent it off to a show in Utah and didn't look at it for about a year. Once I got it back, I couldn't resist working on it some more. So I pumped up the color, softened the background, added some texture to the foreground, and softened all my edges quite a bit. Here's what it looks like now:

Jenkins Johnson Gallery SF

While driving home tonight I noticed the huge paintings by Ben Aronson hanging in the windows at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery. I'm going to have to go back soon to grab a second look. Great work.

Guided sketch books for kids

Maybe it's because of the baby on the way... but, I've had the idea to make a sketch book for kids that is more or less "guided". You could also call it an activity book, but it doesn't tell you how to do it, it just gets you started. Like drawing "games" you could play with two people where one person is telling the other what to draw, but not how to draw it. Anyway, I'm too late, because Taro Gomi has already done it. She has a few different books like this. And they all look like they'd be pretty fun to do (if I was a kid this is).

Creature

...a coffee table book.

While at Costco last night, by myself, I almost bought this amazing book. I was told not to splurge so I didn't get it, but it's really great. Here's one of the photos from the book. I was actually thinking it would be a great reference book to sketch from.

UPDATE: Even WIRED thinks this book is cool. They have tons of pics from the book here.

I saw this painting at the small private gallery that the MOMA operates out of the 1st floor of the Gap Corporate building here in San Francisco. I think the only way you can see it is if you have a willing Gap Corporate employee as your escort. Anyway, it's my favorite Richter painting, and breathtaking in person.

Paul Davis is my Hero

His work is amazing, he's an excellent teacher, and he's actually a pretty decent guy.

Paul Davis and David Dornan teach workshops during the summer in Helperm, Utah. Their 2006 schedule is out at HelperWorkshops.com. See you there :)

Kevin Bean

Yesterday

The SFMOMA is having a great show in March called "Finding the Figure". While looking up more images by Dave Balona I stumbled across the work of Kevin Bean at the Charles Campbell Gallery here in San Francisco. His paintings reminds me of the photo albums that everyone has tucked away in a box someplace safe.

Internet Tip #1: Find more sites that you love

OK, so you've found a site that you really, really love. You check it everyday and still can't seem to get enough. How do you find related sites that offer up the same type of content?

One way to do it is to search for all the sites that link directly to the site that you're so fond of...

Say you like a design blog called, designsponge.blogspot.com. If you type in "link:designsponge.blogspot.com" into any search engine, it will return all the sites it found that link to that site. You can also go to Marketleap and use their link popularity check tool and they will look up your site in several different search engines at once, and rank your site next to other sites so you can tell how "popular" it is. When I searched designsponge.blogspot.com on Marketleap's tool, it showed that it's linked to by over 250,000 sites. More than Coke.com and MarthaStewart.com and just a little less than eTrade.com and Napster.com. Amazing huh!

Southwest art

I just got the February issue of Southwest Art. Lots of good landscapes in this issue. Two artists that caught my attention are Kathryn Altus and Ken Auster (shown in the previous posts). I like that if you see something or someone that looks interesting in any magazine, that it's so easy to look them up online and see more of their work.

Bar Code Art

Bar codes are fascinating, and Scott Blake is obsessed. Don't forget to send for a free postcard, or build your very own personalized bar code.

A tangent thought is how to integrate the use of stencils in my own work.

Save Gocco

Dec 10 2005
It was announced this week that riso, the parent company of gocco, will eventually discontinue all "print gocco" products in it's home japanese market due to a 40% decline in domestic sales. riso will pursue other product lines not related to gocco.

additionally, riso will cease importing "print gocco" systems and supplies to north america. while gocco exposure units are scarce, dealers have been assured there is a 3 year supply of all other gocco products.

For all of us that love Print Gocco, this comes as sad news.

Hopefully it will be picked up by another company!
