Save Gocco

It was announced this week that riso, the parent company of gocco, will eventually discontinue all "print gocco" products in it's home japanese market due to a 40% decline in domestic sales. riso will pursue other product lines not related to gocco.

additionally, riso will cease importing "print gocco" systems and supplies to north america. while gocco exposure units are scarce, dealers have been assured there is a 3 year supply of all other gocco products.

For all of us that love Print Gocco, this comes as sad news.

Hopefully it will be picked up by another company!

Brandon Cook

Brandon Cook has just overhaulded his site. It's interesting how he focuses on manipulating the medium. Through pushing and pulling the oil paint he develops layers and colors that tell a complex story.

I prefer his recent work over his older paintings. He has a one man show coming up at the A Gallery in Salt Lake in 2006.

3 New Paintings

I just shipped three new paintings to The Apple Frame Gallery. These ones are big, so make sure to see them in person (available after the 14th of December)!

More sketching...

As of late I've been try to sketch more... I worked on this while doing our laundry. It looks unfinished because it is (the dryer finished before the sketch did).

Holiday Small Works Show - Part 2

The Holiday show opening at the Apple Frame Gallery is tonight from 6 - 9 pm. If you're in Bountiful, go and check it out. I can't be in Utah this weekend, or else I would be there.

These three paintings are the last pieces I am entering in the show. There is also a fourth painting called "Grazing Cattle" that I posted in an earlier blog entry.

Over the last year I've run into Jared Clark a few times, mostly by accident, because we have similar friends.

The "Build" type installations/paintings he's been doing lately are really amazing. He must have a huge room somewhere, or two, that's packed full of all sorts of odd "finds".

I pulled the photos from his blog.

James Jean

When I see great illustration work it makes me want to drop everything and start drawing. Here's an artist, James Jean, out of LA that makes me want to do just that. He went to SVA and has been in everything from TIME to The New Yorker (Target AD).

What really caught my eye was the quality of his sketchbooks.

Robert Bechtle

When my brother was here this last spring, we went to the Robert Bechtle exhibit at the SF MOMA. It's amazing that someone can paint something so exact. They are beautiful. I love this painting shown above because it reminds me of the old blue Oldsmobile stationwagion that my parents had.

There is a really great video about Bechtle here. (I was surprised to learn that he uses a projector to aid in his painting, and that he considers his camera a kind of sketchbook.)

Robert Coombs

Robert Coombs was the best painter in my class at Utah State. All of his paintings are crafted with precision. They are amazing. To my knowledge, he's still living in Logan, UT. Though he's showing in a couple of gallerys around the west. One of them is here.

His work kind of reminds me of Pino, though I wonder if he'd agree?

Jeff Hein

If your in Salt Lake on the 3rd Friday of the month (or the 1st Friday in December), don't miss the SLC gallery stroll.

Last time I went, I visited Jeff Hein's studio. At the time, while I was still living in Salt Lake, I should have sacrificed and taken some classes from him.

It will be interesting to see the piece he entered into the 2006 LDS church art show.

I first met Tim Giles when we both took a workshop from Camille Korry a few years ago. Since then he has set up a fantastic business making and selling very high quality linen art panels. I put in my first order a few days ago and I can't wait to use them.

Casey Jex Smith

When I first moved to San Francisco, in 2004, everyone I knew kept telling me I needed to check out Casey's work. It didn't take long before I got to see a few pieces displayed at his apartment, and take a short tour through his studio.
